Nicholas Mukhtar is a leader with experience in public health, business, and consulting. He started his career in Detroit, where he founded a health organization called Healthy Detroit. Over the years, he has worked with political leaders, businesses, and family offices, offering advice and managing operations. Today, he works with clients across the country on business operations, strategy, and management consulting.

Early Life and Education

Nicholas Mukhtar was raised in Detroit, Michigan. He began his higher education at the University of Dayton as a Chaminade Scholar and completed his Bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University in Detroit in 2013. His interest in public health and policy led him to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he graduated in 2017 with dual Master’s degrees in Public Policy and Public health as a distinguished Bloomberg fellow.

Founding Healthy Detroit

In 2012, while still a student, Nicholas identified a gap in Detroit’s public health resources. To address this, he founded Healthy Detroit, a nonprofit organization aiming to improve community health through innovative programs and services. Under his leadership, Healthy Detroit raised over $100 million, allowing the organization to build sustainable and impactful programs and become a national model of success. Nicholas played a big role in developing partnerships and securing resources, resulting in an annual operating budget of $15 million by 2017.

Transition to Consulting and Public Policy

After successfully leading Healthy Detroit, Nicholas decided to broaden his impact by entering the field of public policy consulting. He founded a small consulting practice in 2017 called Healthy Communities, based in Washington, D.C. At Healthy Communities, Nicholas worked closely with political leaders and government agencies. His public health and policy expertise allowed him to advise high-profile clients, including Speaker Paul Ryan, the White House’s Office of American Innovation, and Senators Rand Paul and Tim Scott. 

Nicholas’s consulting work focused on creating solutions to public health challenges while addressing broader policy issues. He used his experience from Healthy Detroit to guide policymakers in developing strategies that improved communities across the country.

Founding Tera Strategies

Along with his work at Healthy Detroit and Healthy Communities, Nicholas founded Tera Strategies, a business and management consulting practice based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. At Tera Strategies, Nicholas works with a variety of clients, including business owners, family offices, and corporations.

Nicholas uses his experience in operations, strategy, and management to help his clients succeed. His consulting work focuses on creating efficient systems, solving business challenges, and helping organizations achieve their goals. His clients include several family offices, two large wealth management practices, and a handful of successful business owners.

Nicholas Mukhtar has achieved remarkable milestones in his career, receiving recognition for his leadership and contributions to public health. In 2014, his organization was one of only three in the nation featured in the Surgeon General’s Report to the President and Congress.

In 2015, he was honored as the Playmakers Changemaker of the Year, recognizing his efforts in driving meaningful change in his community. Two years later, in 2017, the American Public Health Association (APHA) named his organization the National Public Health Organization of the Year. Nicholas is also a Bloomberg Fellow at Johns Hopkins University, a distinction reflecting his expertise in advancing public health through education and action.

Making an Impact

Nicholas Mukhtar has devoted much of his life to philanthropy and community service. Beyond being the founder of Healthy Detroit, Nicholas has served on multiple boards, contributing his time to various causes. He has been a board member of the Men’s Health Foundation, Trinity Health System — Livonia, and the Michigan Parks & Recreation Association. Additionally, he was appointed by Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan to Chair of the Detroit Parks & Recreation Commission.

Nicholas has also served on the External Advisory Board at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine and the Steering Committee of the Michigan Community Health Worker Alliance.

Personal Life

Nicholas Mukhtar lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with his fiancée, Lexi. The couple is preparing for their wedding in April, and together, they participate in charitable causes, aligning their values with their professional endeavors.
